Carnival main attraction is the Samba Parade show which is something everybody has to experience at least once in life. Today the event is broadcast to dozens of countries and all Brazilian states. Fourteen special group schools march on Carnival Sunday and Monday, seven each day. The parade starts at 7 p.m. and goes on until sunlight the next day, around 6 a.m. This samba marathon is also a fierce competition. Each year two schools will go down from special to access group, and vice-versa. |

A Samba School is an association of people from the same neighborhood, usually a popular community (favela) or suburban area. They get together on a regular basis for samba meetings and rehearsals. Samba schools provide valuable jobs to the community in the production of costumes, and floats. Each year schools choose a different theme Samba Schools may take to the Parade anything from 3,000 to 5,000 members, and from 6 to 8 floats. They have to make it through the runway in a period from 60 to 80 minutes. This means each member will spend only about 25-30 minutes in the Sambodrome. The experience is so intense, though, that memories will last a lifetime. |

The Sambodromo opens its doors at 17:00. There is a little opening ceremony at 20:00. The Parade begins at 21:00.
Most people generally enjoy watching 3-5 samba schools on average. Thus, to arrive at around 22:00-23:00 would be a good idea, considering that that’s when the atmosphere starts to peak.
The two nights are similar in terms of set-up. New school schedules are offered nightly. 6 of the best 12 samba schools march on both Sunday and Monday. Buy your tickets for the night which best fits into your schedule.
