Rocinha (ho-seen-yah) is the largest favela
(impoverished area) in Latin America with
around 150,000 inhabitants.
On this tour we observe the daily routine of
this marginal community with visits with the locals,
to day care centers,
schools and local establishments.
We will trek through the narrow streets to the Academicos da Rocinha Samba School
to observe how the community prepares for Carnaval festivities.
There is also a open market with food and
hand-made goods from the North and
Northeastern regions of Brazil in the
Boiadeiro Square. Obs: Donations
(products or money) to the day care centers
and schools are customary and are to be
given directly to members of the community.
